THE DETAILS BEHIND AN AUTO POLICY.

Choosing Auto coverage involves more than naming the vehicle. Here are eight details people commonly review before deciding, laid out like a spec sheet.

See Auto Policies
01Use

How the vehicle is used

Commuting, errands, business trips or the occasional weekend drive. How a car spends its week is often one of the first questions.

02Drivers

Who regularly drives it

The people who take the wheel most often, not only the person whose name is on the title.

03Limits

Coverage limits

The maximum amounts a policy may pay for covered claims. They vary by policy and by type of coverage.

04Deductible

Deductible choices

What you may pay toward a covered loss before the policy contributes. More on this a little further down.

05Liability

Liability coverage

Relates to covered injury or auto damage to others when you are legally responsible, within the policy's terms.

06Physical damage

Collision and comprehensive options

Options that can address covered damage to your own vehicle, from collisions to certain non-collision events.

07Vehicle

Vehicle characteristics

Year, make, model, safety equipment and condition are details commonly requested during a review.

08Household

Household driving situation

Several drivers, several cars, a newly licensed family member. The picture at home matters too.

How each detail is weighed varies by policy and insurer. Not every factor plays the same role in every policy.
03Terminology

THREE AUTO TERMS.
THREE DIFFERENT JOBS.

Liability, collision and comprehensive often get mentioned in the same breath, yet each one does a different job. Hover, tap or use the arrow keys to compare them.

Introductory explanations only. Policy definitions vary. Policies may include some, all or none of these coverages.
04The deductible question

A HIGHER NUMBER HERE CHANGES WHAT YOU PAY THERE.

Definition

A deductible is generally the amount the policyholder is responsible for on a covered loss before the applicable insurance payment, depending on the policy.

Different deductible choices can affect both what you may pay after a covered loss and the overall cost of the policy.

Example only. Illustrative proportions. One covered loss, two deductible levels
LOW

A / After a covered loss

Your share of a covered loss is smaller. More of the remaining amount may fall to the applicable insurance payment, subject to limits and terms.

A / Policy cost

The deductible level can influence the cost of the policy. Ask how it changes between options before deciding.

B / After a covered loss

Your share of a covered loss is larger before the applicable insurance payment begins, subject to limits and terms.

B / Policy cost

A different deductible level can mean a different policy cost. Compare both options side by side, not one alone.

HIGH
One covered loss Lower deductible: smaller share for you

05One household. More than one driver.

  1. 01 Weekdays
  2. 02 Weekends
  3. 03 Since the policy started

Driver A commutes in Vehicle 01, the newer car. Driver B uses Vehicle 02 for local errands and school runs.

Who regularly drives each vehicle?

Is one car used mainly for commuting?

On weekends Driver B takes Vehicle 01 on longer trips, while Driver A runs errands in Vehicle 02.

Are there multiple vehicles in the household?

Does each driver regularly use more than one car?

Vehicle 01 replaced an older car last year, and Driver B now commutes twice a week.

Have vehicle or driver details changed since the policy was arranged?

Does the policy still list the right people next to the right cars?

When several people and vehicles share the same driveway, getting the details organized becomes especially useful.

Illustrative scenario. It does not describe the coverage anyone must buy or how a specific insurer will treat a situation.

Talk it through
06Beyond the car

THE CAR IS ONE PART OF THE picture.

Auto is where many conversations start. Two others come up often: the people who rely on your income, and the trips you're planning. Garage Digital offers Life and Travel insurance too.

02 / Life insuranceFinancial responsibilities

LIFE

Life insurance can be worth considering when other people rely on your finances: a spouse or partner, children, a household that runs on your income, or debts that would still need paying. A useful starting point is the list of responsibilities, then the policy.

  1. Q1Who depends on your income?
  2. Q2What financial responsibilities would continue?
  3. Q3What policy type and amount are you considering?
03 / Travel insurance

TRAVEL

Travel insurance options can address different travel-related situations, depending on the policy. Before choosing, read exactly what is included, the limits, the exclusions and any conditions that apply to your trip.

  • What type of trip are you taking?
  • Which situations does the policy address?
  • What limits or exclusions apply?
  • Does existing coverage overlap with anything in the travel policy?

07Before you choose

FIVE THINGS WORTH READING BEFORE YOU DECIDE.

Auto, Life or Travel, these five checks apply to almost any policy you're looking at. Scroll through them one at a time.

Check 01 / 05
01

Check 01 / Coverage

What coverage is actually included?

Read the list of coverages on the policy itself rather than the summary in your head. Note which ones apply to which vehicle, person or trip.

02

Check 02 / Limits

What limits apply?

Limits are the maximum amounts a policy may pay. Check each one, because different coverages often carry different limits.

03

Check 03 / Out of pocket

What deductible or out-of-pocket responsibility applies?

Find the amount you may be responsible for on a covered claim, and whether it differs from one coverage to another.

04

Check 04 / Fine print

Which exclusions or conditions deserve attention?

Exclusions and conditions shape when coverage applies. A few careful minutes here answer questions before they come up.

05

Check 05 / Accuracy

Are the people, vehicles, trip details or financial responsibilities represented accurately?

Drivers, cars, travel dates, dependents. If the details on paper don't match real life, that's worth sorting out.
